Maks is one of a small number of Dalmatians worldwide that carries two copies of the desirable SLC2A9 gene therefore every puppy he produces will have one copy of the gene and therefore Low Uric Acid (LUA)! Emily has one copy of the LUA gene so we expect some of these puppies to have two copies! This beautiful litter is the result of breeding an outcrossed female back to her sire. I believe that homozygous puppies from this litter will be very useful in incorporating the LUA gene in other bloodlines. They are very healthy and consistent.

Day Twenty Two

Yesterday was so busy I forgot to tell you that it was nail trimming and weighing day again. They are all growing uniformly which is a very nice thing to see. It means they are all healthy and Bizzi has plenty of milk. When I see a litter that has big puppies and runt puppies I think either the breeder is not doing a very good job keeping the mother's nutrition at the level it should be to produce plenty of good quality milk or the litter is sickly with internal parasites. The puppies all weigh between 3 lb 2 oz and 3 lb 9 oz.

Today Bizzi only went in to feed them when she became uncomfortable from too much milk so I decided it was time to start helping her out. I got out the flying saucer and heated some water to put on their puppy food to soften it. I bought some Kefir to mix with the food. I put it down and they were gobbling it up in no time. If you are unfamiliar with kefir it is a milk product that is full of probiotic cultures. It is like a cousin to yogurt but it tastes a little like buttermilk. It is very nutritious and the puppies love it. I often start them on goat milk mixed with their puppy food too plus I will mix in an egg also. I have chickens so I know the quality of the eggs I give them.

I thought you might enjoy watching them eating their first meal from a bowl.

ALL GONE!
